Mount
Agri (ARARAT)
The
legendary Mt. Ararat is the highest peak (5137 m) in Turkey. It is
located at eastern Turkey, close to the Iranian border. Ararat is
famous all over the world since it is believed to be where the Noah's
Ark landed after the great flood. While Ararat is of general interest
for being a setting to a wealth of legends, it also draws the attention
of mountaineers for its uniqueness.
Mt. Ararat is a volcanic
cone. A cap of ice covers the summit with some glaciers underneath.
Climbing is usually from the town of Dogubayazit, which offers a relatively
easy track of 3400 m. On the north side there is a huge depression
called the "Ahora Gorge" (Cehennem Deresi) that resulted of an earthquake
during the last century.
Mt.
Ararat is suitable for summer ascents and skiing
in early spring. |
