Aladag
Range - Central
Taurus
Highest
peaks of the Taurus Mountains are at the Aladag Range, with nearly
fifty summits above 3000 meters. These calcareous mountains of red
rocks resemble Dolomites in shape. The region has a complicated
valley system, where steep gorges and dead-end canyons are common.
Many peaks have one side with a regular incline of shelving ledges
or steep scree slopes, while the other side is precipitous.
Some
of the important peaks are Demirkazik (3756 m), Kaldi (3734 m),
Kizilkaya (3725 m) and Engin Tepe (3723 m). In the mid of the Aladag
Range is a vast plateau of 3100 m. altitude called Yedigöller (Seven
Lakes). Beyond Yedigöller, a deep valley links the region to the
waterfalls and the forests of Mediterranean region.
This
range, which is a popular area for mountaineers, is good for climbing
and trekking in the spring and summer and for skiing in early spring.
