Mount
Erciyes
On the planes of Central Anatolia, close
to Cappadocia, surprisingly rises Mt. Erciyes. An extinguished volcanic
cone, Erciyes has numerous parasite cones, and is considered one of
the most interesting volcanic formations of the world.
On the eastern
side is one of the major winter sport centers of Turkey that is snow
covered for about eight months of the year.
The summit is
a twenty-meter loose rock pinnacle (3917 m). Two glaciers approach
the summit, a 600-meter glacier at the Northwest side and another
one from the Tekir Plateau on the eastern side. While an easier climb
to the summit is possible from the glacier at the Tekir Plateau, experienced
climbers may choose the more challenging climbing track from the northwest
glacier. Climb to the summit is also possible by choosing the third
track, which circles the eastern glacier from the left. |
