Kaçkar
Ranges
Ranges of mountains
stretch parallel to the Turkish Black Sea coast, with Verçenik Range
(Mt.Vercenik 3711 m) in the West, Altiparmak Range (Mt. Altiparmak
3495 m) in the East and the Kaçkar Range in the Center. Mountains
rise close to the sea, leaving a narrow coastal strip of about 30
Kilometers. The highest point of the range is the Kaçkar Peak (3932
m) in Kaçkar Range.
The
sharp peaks along the Black Sea Range are separated by deep valleys,
with numerous streams and rivers rushing down the slopes. Due to the
mild and rainy climate of the region, the area is a sea of greenery.
Tea plantations of lower altitudes are followed by a thickly wooded
area. Above the tree level start alpine meadows sprinkled with hundreds
of mountain flowers. There are some persistent snows and glaciers
on the slopes and many deep blue glacier lakes.
Unlike the humid
zone below, climbers and trekkers enjoy clear and sunny weather throughout
summer. The region is very suitable for trekking, climbing and skiing. |
